MISSION TRIP TO NEW ORLEANS
JUNE, 2014
The mission team shared highlights and experiences on Sunday, June 29. Everyone enjoyed the program and video. An ice cream social followed the service.
Sunday, June 1
Praise God for a safe trip! The mission team, comprised of twenty-six workers, arrived safely in New Orleans on Sunday after a full day of travel, including six stops in Alabama! Carolyn did a fabulous job as our bus driver. We registered at the Seminary, checked in, and attended a worship service. Our group prayed together and looked forward to a great week of service. Ken and Pat led us in our group time before we went back to the dorms. All of us were ready for a good night's sleep!
Monday, June 2
Ministry opportunities on Monday were awesome! Ministries included construction and repairs on a home, ministry to the couple that live in the home, prayer walking in a neighborhood filled with poverty and addiction, ministering to a beautiful girl who is struggling with a heroin addiction, visiting the Beulah Community South that works with men who are plagued by addiction, and working in an on-site thrift shop that helps to fund the work. Our ministry groups felt the prayers of our Providence family and our personal families.
Tuesday, June 3
God continued to bless our mission team on Tuesday! One group completed the construction work and painting they began at the couple's home on Monday. The couple was so appreciative and touched by the love that was shown to them by this group. The wife is very ill and her husband is so devoted to caring for her. Without the group's work, the couple could not have had the much-needed work done at their home.
Another group went to the Kingsley House in the city, and ministered in their adult day center. Our folks visited with the adults, participated in the Bible Study, helped them with activities and even danced with them! Doc brought a devotional and the people shared scripture verses and sang songs. The adults were so grateful for the devotional books, as well as the personal time that we spent with them.
Wednesday, June 4
What a mighty God we serve! Today God opened more doors for powerful ministry. The ten people in the construction group had the opportunity to work at a different home today. Some of the work included cutting the grass, framing and painting new columns, replacing gutters, making repairs and painting the pergola. The owner was so proud to see the improvements that were made on her home. The group endured the heat and worked together to complete the many tasks. Because of the skills of our construction group, projects are being completed ahead of schedule. The teamwork is amazing!
God moved in a mighty way for our ministry group! This group went to the grocery store to purchase the food to prepare for lunch at the "Women of the Well" ministry. On arrival at the center, the kitchen crew began to prepare the meal. While they were cooking, the other half of the group visited with the residents. They listened, talked to them, painted fingernails, witnessed, shared scripture and participated in a devotional that was led by Mrs. Nancy. The residents sang "I Need You Lord" as our blessing for lunch. They enjoyed the meal and expressed their appreciation to the group. It was so hard to leave our new friends. Pray that they will have the strength to stay in the program to get the help they need.
Thursday, June 5
God continued to do great things on Thursday! After breakfast, our entire group traveled to the Kingsley House in the city. Part of our group helped with the adult daycare program earlier in the week. We really enjoyed visiting with the people, attending their Bible Study, singing songs, playing games, dancing with them, and giving them encouraging words. We will carry the memories with us!
After we ate our sandwiches at the Seminary Student Center, we went back to rest and prepare for our next ministry. None of us knew the incredible blessings and opportunities that God was going to bring our way in a few hours!
At 4:30 p.m. we loaded the bus and Carolyn drove us to the French Quarter to an area by the river. We met the leaders of "The Church Without Walls" and saw where the services are held for the homeless. Pastor Troy, Philip and Mr. Jackson said they needed music for the service. This gave us the opportunity for our mission team to serve as the choir for the outdoor service. Mrs. Nancy led us in several songs including Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Victory in Jesus, Peace Like a River, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, Just As I Am, I Surrender All. The people truly appreciated the music. Pastor Troy brought the powerful message and several came forward at the end of the service. We saw God at work right in front of us!
After the service, our group helped to feed the homeless people that attended. Our group served the meal as they came through the line. We talked to many of the people, and some sat on the grass with them. Others prayed with them and encouraged them. So many came back for a second helping and some even came back for a third helping. It was a life-changing experience and one that we will never forget. Their faces will remain in our hearts and minds. Please pray for those that are on the streets right now with no place to go. We are counting our blessings of shelter, food and family.
Friday, June 6
Today we went on a tour of the many areas affected by Hurricane Katrina, and learned a great deal about New Orleans. After the tour, we went to a place called Morning Call to get the famous beignets. From there, we all rode on a trolley to the French Quarter. We divided into groups for sight-seeing, shopping and lunch. Tonight our group is tired from the heat, humidity and a great deal walking. Everyone is resting or packing for our trip home tomorrow. We are looking forward to seeing our families. We will be carrying the people of New Orleans in our hearts as we return to our homes.
