Senior Moments

10/24/2014

Margaret and I were blessed to be with our Senior Adults on their annual apple trip to North Georgia.  What a blessing to be with such a special group of people. The Senior Adults of Providence Baptist Church take their faith seriously and, as a result, they enrich the lives of so many. I want to share with you the blessings I received as I listened to them, laughed with them and observed them as they celebrated the wonderful life God has given them.

I heard their laughter. They laughed with others, they laughed at themselves and their laughter communicated the joy that was in their heart.

I was inspired by the way they expressed their concern for one another. There was the extension of the helping hand assisting each other on getting on and off the bus. They wanted to make sure that no one was left behind. They communicated "what happens to  you makes a difference to me."

My heart was warmed as they welcomed the visitors among us. In a brief period of time, the strangers in our midst became part of our Providence family.  New and meaningful relationships were established.  Friendships were begun that will last throughout eternity.

I was encouraged to hear their stories.  Yes, I heard them as they shared life experiences. They are no strangers to pain. Yet, in the midst of the pain, they know that "nothing can separate them from God's love which is in Christ Jesus."

Our Seniors are professional shoppers. They take their time in finding good deals.  When they find something special, they tell others about it.

They have a common bond in Jesus Christ, yet they recognize their diversity.  Not everyone ate fried apple pies.  Some ate fried peach pies. One or two ate fried cherry pies.  When it came to purchasing apples to bring home to be used in the homemade apple pies, variety characterized their choices.

I was amazed at how they could adjust to changes in plans.  Our professional bus driver suggested that we take a different way home from the one we came. The Seniors were all for the new route.  So, our exceptional Bus and Van Drivers took us on a journey through the mountains of North Georgia.
What a wonderful journey. The leaves once again reminded us of the changing seasons  The hills and mountains called to our mind the words of the Psalmist:  "I will look unto the hills from whence cometh my help, my help cometh from the Lord."

Our Seniors celebrated the moment, including the rest room stops.   They spoke of the beauty of the day, the colors of the leaves, the mountain streams.  Yes, each Senior lived each moment of the journey, thanking God for His love, the fellowship they were having with friends, and finally, a safe return home.

I am so blessed to be Pastor of such an exceptional group of people.  Do you want to learn some valuable lessons about how to have a full and meaningful life?  If you do, spend time with the Seniors of Providence Baptist Church.  They are busy, but will make time to share a senior moment with you.
