A Prayer For This Hour

6/27/2015

In a recent sermon I shared with the Providence Baptist family the tremendous influence my Grandfather, Joe Wilson had on my life.  He taught me to love the Bible.  He also taught me the essence of the Christian faith is a surrender of life to Jesus Christ.  My Grandfather loved books and was always sharing his books with me.  I once had in my library a special gift from my Grandfather.  The gift was the biography of the late Chaplain of the United States Senate, Peter Marshall.  The book was "A Man Called Peter."  I found great inspiration as I read the journey of this great preacher of the Gospel.  I shared with Providence that I was unable to locate the book in my library.  I concluded that I had misplaced it or someone had borrowed it and failed to return it.

Later that week, Greg Brett and Lamar Nestlehutt each purchased a copy of the book and gave it to me.  Now I am so blessed to have one in my Church study and one in my home study.  I am grateful to these two friends for this special gift.

In recent days, I have read the biography and inspiration found its way to the depts of my being.  Peter Marshall was a man who walked with God.  He was indeed a prophet who preached with compassion and great conviction.  He was also a Pastor who ministered God's love in our nation's capitol.

A prayer prayed by Peter Marshall is so relevant to this hour in the life of our country.

"Lord God of Heaven, who hath so lavishly blessed this land, make us Thy people to be humble.  Keep us ever aware that the good things we enjoy have come from Thee, that Thou did lend them to us.
Impress upon our smugness the knowledge that we are not owners-but steward, remind us, less we become filled with conceit, that one day a reckoning will be required of us.

Sanctify our love of country, that our boasting may be turned into humility and our pride into a minstry to men everywhere.

HELP US MAKE THIS GOD'S OWN COUNTRY BY LIVING LIKE GOD'S OWN PEOPLE." AMEN.
